The woman in the cage

First book in Department Q:

The Woman in the Cage is the first book in Jussi Adler-Olsen's popular Department Q series.

On a beautiful winter day, the young, up-and-coming politician from the Danish parliament, Merete Lynggaard, disappears without a trace. The media speculates on everything from murder and kidnapping to a voluntary disappearance. The police immediately launch a large-scale search – but to no avail. Merete Lynggaard is as if she has sunk into the ground.

Only when the hard-pressed Deputy Inspector Carl Mørck is put in charge of the police's newly established department for 'cases under special surveillance' does a decisive breakthrough occur in the investigation. And soon Carl Mørck and his assistant Assad are on the trail of a ruthless criminal who, driven by hatred, has hatched a completely insane plan. The question is whether Carl Mørck and Assad can thwart it.
